Bridge Deck Inspection

Bridge Deck Inspection is a Non destructive multi sensor technique that identifies areas of deterioration and calculates a quantitative index to determine the degree of deterioration for each span/lane of the bridge.

The FLIR infrared camera provides a more accurate evaluation of the condition of concrete bridge decks. It also helps to better predict the progression of deterioration and assess the need for rehabilitation. By enhancing the early detection of deterioration on the bridge’s surface, transportation agencies will be able to apply proactive maintenance actions to extend the remaining life of the deck with lower life-cycle costs.

In this research project, three infrared cameras with different specifications manufactured by FLIR systems, Inc., were compared for accuracy in application to bridge deck scanning from a vehicle. The model T420 and T640 have the same type of detector (microbolometer) and have similar thermal sensitivities, but their resolutions are different. The model T640 and SC5600 have the same resolution, but their thermal sensitivities, detector types and spectral ranges are different. Comparison of Infrared Cameras for Concrete Bridge Deck Scanning: Field Test at Haymarket Bridge

In this research project, three infrared cameras with different specifications manufactured by FLIR Systems, Inc., were compared for effectiveness in application to bridge deck scanning from a moving vehicle. The T420 and T640 models have the same type of detector (uncooled microbolometer) and have similar thermal sensitivities, but their imaging resolutions are different. The model T640 and SC5600 have around the same imaging resolution, but their thermal sensitivities, spectral ranges, and detector types (as the SC5600 has a higher quality “InSb” type installed) are different. The results obtained by these three different cameras were compared to show how each’s specifications have evident effects on the degree of accuracy in the detection of delaminations within concrete bridge decks.
